How to pick a class without overpaying
Most people start at the wrong end of this decision. They pick a cabin they like the look of, then discover on the day that it cannot make the sector without a stop, or that it needs more runway than the field has, or that the eighth seat disappears once the bags go in.
Work backwards instead. Start with the sector length, because that sets the floor. Then check the runway at both ends, because that sets the ceiling. Whatever survives both filters is your real shortlist, and inside that shortlist you can shop on cabin, on age and on price.
Sector length sets the floor
Under 400 nautical miles the class barely changes the clock. Most of the flight is climb and descent, so a light jet and a heavy jet arrive within minutes of each other. Between 400 and 1,500 miles the differences start to show but stay modest. Past 2,000 miles the question becomes binary: either the aircraft goes nonstop or it does not, and a fuel stop adds forty five minutes to an hour of ground time plus the fuel burned climbing back to altitude.
Runway sets the ceiling
This is the filter people forget. Aspen, Telluride, Key West, Cannes and London City all restrict which aircraft can use them, sometimes by runway length and sometimes by wingspan or certification. A hot afternoon at a high elevation field cuts performance further, which is why a summer departure out of the mountains occasionally means leaving bags or fuel behind.
Weight is a zero sum budget
Seats, bags and fuel all draw on the same maximum takeoff weight. Fill every seat and you lose range. Fill the tanks and you lose seats. The published figures on this site show each variable at its own best case, which is why an operator has to confirm the combination against a specific tail number before anyone commits.
