Private terminalsand FBOs explained

You will not see a check in desk, a security line or a gate. Here is what replaces them, and what to expect the first time.

What an FBO is

A fixed base operator is the private terminal at an airport. It handles arriving and departing general aviation: fuel, parking, ground handling, crew facilities and a lounge for passengers.

Large airports have several competing FBOs, and they differ in price, quality and location on the field. Which one you use is usually chosen by the operator, but you can express a preference, and at a few airports the difference in ground fees is worth caring about.

What actually happens when you arrive

You drive to the FBO rather than the main terminal. In many cases the car is directed straight onto the ramp beside the aircraft. Where it is not, you walk through a small lounge and out a door onto the apron.

There is no check in. Somebody greets you by name, takes your bags, and confirms the aircraft is ready. Identification is checked, sometimes informally, sometimes at the aircraft. There is no security screening on domestic private flights in the United States, and this is the part that most surprises first time passengers.

Fifteen to thirty minutes before departure is the normal arrival guidance domestically. Thirty to forty five for an international departure. If you arrive early there is coffee and somewhere quiet to sit. If you are late the crew will usually wait, within their duty limits, though ATC slots at busy fields can impose a real deadline.

What is provided and what is not

Most FBOs offer coffee, snacks, a business area, conference rooms and restrooms, at no charge to departing passengers. Wi-Fi is standard. Crew cars and rental desks are common.

Catering is arranged separately, usually through the operator, and is ordered in advance rather than picked up on the day. If you want something specific, ask at booking. The default on many charters is modest, and people who expect a full meal on a two hour flight are frequently disappointed because nobody asked them.

Ground transport

Cars can meet you on the ramp at most FBOs, which is the fastest possible arrival: aircraft door to car door in under a minute. Arrange it in advance through the operator or the FBO so the vehicle is authorised airside.

If you are driving yourself, FBOs usually have parking, sometimes free for the duration of a charter and sometimes charged. Worth confirming for a long trip.

Baggage

Bags are loaded by the handling crew while you board. There is no belt, no tag and no carousel at the far end. On arrival the bags come off within a minute or two, usually directly into your car.

The constraint is the aircraft, not the terminal. Baggage volume on smaller jets is genuinely limited and the shape of the hold door matters as much as the volume. Give real dimensions for skis, golf clubs and hard cases at quote stage.

The parts people ask about afterwards

You can usually board as soon as the aircraft is ready, and many people do, sitting on board while the crew finishes. Departure is when everyone is aboard rather than at a scheduled time, subject to slots and clearance.

The cabin is yours. Phones stay on in most cases, though the crew will ask for them to be off cellular during the critical phases. There is no announcement ritual, no queue and nobody else on the aircraft. The adjustment for most first time passengers is realising how much of commercial air travel was queueing rather than flying.
